National Day and Jersey Anthem

About the consultation

National Day

Liberation Day is seen by many as Jersey’s national day, but 9 May has never been officially agreed as such by the States Assembly.

Official recognition as Jersey's national day would not change the way Liberation Day is commemorated, but it would help other jurisdictions to understand the importance of 9 May to Islanders, and the story of The Occupation.

Jersey Anthem

While ‘God Save the King’ is our national anthem, the Island itself does not have an officially recognised anthem of its own. This has led to confusion about which piece of music should be played at certain events.

An anthem symbolises national identity and fosters pride and unity. The Jersey Anthem would be played at sporting events and cultural ceremonies, locally and internationally. Beautiful Jersey has been suggested as it is already played at sporting events and taught in some schools.

What will happen next

The results of this survey will be published, and will be used to determine whether the States Assembly are asked to formally adopt:

  • 9 May, Liberation Day, as Jersey's national day
  • Beautiful Jersey as Jersey's anthem (please note God Save the King would remain the national anthem).
